Your Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for a Canada Work Visa

Planning to work in Canada? Whether you're chasing a dream job, advancing your career, or simply exploring new horizons, obtaining a Canadian work visa is a major step forward. At Reliant Travel, we make the process smoother, clearer, and far less overwhelming. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of what the journey looks like, step by step.

1. Determine Your Eligibility
Before anything else, it's crucial to find out if you qualify for a work visa. Canada offers several pathways depending on your situation—whether it's an employer-specific work permit, an open work permit, or a specialized stream like the Global Talent Stream.
Key eligibility factors include:
-
Job offer from a Canadian employer (in most cases)
-
Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), if required
-
Proof of qualifications and relevant work experience
-
Clean criminal record and good health
Reliant Tip: Not sure which visa fits you best? Our expert consultants will assess your profile and recommend the most suitable option.

2. Get a Job Offer (If Required)
For most employer-specific work permits, you need a job offer from a Canadian employer. This offer must meet Canadian labor standards and, in many cases, be supported by a positive LMIA from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).
What’s an LMIA?
It’s a document that proves there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job and that no Canadian worker is available to do it.

3. Gather Your Documentation
Once eligibility is confirmed and you have your job offer, it’s time to gather your documents. Here's what you'll generally need:
-
Valid passport
-
Job offer letter and LMIA (if applicable)
-
Proof of qualifications (degrees, certifications, etc.)
-
Work experience letters
-
Language proficiency test results (if applicable)
-
Police clearance and medical exam reports
-
Proof of financial support
Reliant Tip: We’ll help you organize everything so nothing gets missed or delayed.

4. Submit Your Application
You can apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal. You’ll create an account, fill out the application form, upload your documents, and pay the required fee.
Processing Times: These vary depending on the type of permit, your country of residence, and current application volumes.

5. Biometrics Appointment
After submitting your application, you’ll likely be asked to visit a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide biometrics (fingerprints and a photo). This is a mandatory step for most applicants.
Reliant Tip: Book your biometrics appointment quickly to avoid delays.

6. Wait for a Decision
This is the waiting game! The IRCC will review your application, verify your documents, and may request additional information or schedule an interview.
If approved: You’ll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction and possibly a temporary resident visa (TRV) if you're from a visa-required country.

7. Travel to Canada and Receive Your Work Permit
Once you land in Canada, present your documents and POE Letter at the border. The officer will review everything and issue your actual work permit on the spot.
